The Prayer of Jabez
Author: Jabez
The prayer of Jabez is actually the subject of a book by the same name written by Bruce Wilkinson. This prayer, though short and simple in its structure, is very powerful in meaning and results.
“And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying,
Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed,
and enlarge my coast,
and that thine hand might be with me,
and that thou wouldest keep me from evil,
that it may not grieve me!
And God granted him that which he requested.”
This prayer is easy to memorize, and has four main elements:
1. “Bless me indeed”: asks for bountiful blessings from the Lord, bestowed on us as He sees fit.
2. “Enlarge my coast” refers to one’s sphere of influence or territory. It could refer to your business or personal influence. It’s best to leave it general, God will decide what is best for you.
3. “Thine hand might be with me” asks for God’s protection and guidance.
4. “Keep me from evil” is a request to be kept away from temptation, something that we could all truly use.
This prayer is truly wonderful. I recommend that you read Wilkinson’s book and memorize the prayer.
